I enjoy looking for coins, relics, and gold with my White's XLT.
I have found, roughly, about 30 dollars in coins. Nothing to get excited about but still its fun. Relics wise I have found some really interesting things. Such as belt buckles, silverware, and some unusual buttoms. Still nothing to really write home about, but to me all of them are treasures. As of yet I have found no gold.
Bummer, but I'm still working on it. The XLT is a good unit, easy to operate, with ground balancing a breeze. But I do have to admit that the other functions, discrimination, tone, pinpointing, so on and so forth do require a lot of reading and understanding. In fact it can be quite overwhelming at times. Although I do believe that someone who has been uaing metal detectors for a long time won't find this machine very difficult at all. Someone such as I, this being my first machine, has found the XLT quite challenging at times to set up.
I do really believe though that if I could use my White's XLT more often I would most likely not have half the problems I run into. Because I think most of my frustration is self inflicted. Setting the XLT up for relics, coins, or jewelry, is as simple as turning on the machine. The pre-programed programs for these setting work wonderfully, at least in my option they do. But when you try and go for the gold it turns into a whole new ballgame. I think my inexperience shows up very apparently here. Because the gold program is very lacking in my humble opion. Here is where a more experienced detectorist will excel with this machine. Truely I believe this machine is wonderful. I like it.
My short comings and all. I have seen this machine in the hands of a good detectorist, he did wonderful things with it. It is my hope and expectations to be able to be taught by someone like this someday. I would recommend the Whit's XLT. It's a good machine.

This XLT Whites metal detector, with it's ability to discriminate through highly mineralized soil and also with the ability to set the discriminator for the type of metal you are in search of, far exceeds most other detectors out on the market.
Lets talk moisture. The more of this, the deeper you can go.
Compare with Minelab's best detector, they will run about $4,000.00 or better. They may go much deeper, but Whites I believe is where it's at.
I could say so much more. Just go out to the Arizona dessert, to the hilly regions, about two feet deep you just might score with finding yourself a pocket of gold that could run a few feet to a few yards. How about finding approx. $10,000.00 a day if you know where to look?
I like to run tests using different kinds of metal in different kinds of conditions and soils. Anybody can get all the false signals that they will ever want with probably most of the other detectors out there. Do you know that some places you can buy yourself a piece of blm land and be the legal mineral rights owner.
Such places exists in California, but don't ever give up hope that this Whites metal detector can't take the weather. It is a documented fact that only about 14% of the gold in the world has been found.
Always remember to bring your Whites XLT metal detector along with you, especially when your out in the country, and there is bedrock, and in between the crevices and underneath, there will be gold waiting just for you. Remember to go to jewelry stores that sell gold, and they'll pay you the best price. 5 Stars.

I've had a love affair with White's XLT for many many years. My wife has referred to it as: "the other woman," more times than I can remember. While the XLT is a bit dated now, it still ranks with me as one of the all time greats if not the machine of the century.
It has put so many targets in my pouch over the years I have lost count. I've used the XLT in 20 states, and many times in the UK, where it reigned supreme for many years as the detector of choice. When the XLT was released, it was light years ahead of its competition. Today it still can hold its own against the best.
It's also the machine Linda got started on, with no prompting from me. I would come home from work, and the XLT would be gone, and so would Linda! Because of the easy to use default programs, she was able to use it with no prior experience or coaching from anyone.
The biggest strength of this machine though is in its infinite flexibility, and the ability to tailor it to the task at hand. I don't know who came up with the Signagraph, but it's without a doubt the single best tool I've ever used to determine whether or not to dig. It's a real time saver! I've recovered literally tens of thousands of coins and relics with this machine, and will be hard pressed to match my recoveries with it unless I live for a very long time.
I know both women and men that have used this machine exclusively for nearly 15 years, and they are still going strong. In the all around machine category, the XLT is hard to beat. No other machine even comes close to its flexibility, despite being one of the oldest currently used machines out there. White's really hit a home run with this one!
You may find a niche machine out there that will beat out the XLT in certain conditions, but for sheer flexibility, performance and durability, its still one of the best! For overall performance, longevity, and adaptability, I give the XLT a well earned 5 Stars! It should have been named the "Legend."

I bought my Whites XLT spectrum, some years ago. It is all the performance out of a machine I will ever need. After 13 years of hard hunting, I just sent it in for a tune up (they actually do that you know). There are several features I just love about my machine. Using the settings, I have designed my own programs that allow me to find goodies in places that have been hunted out. A place is never hunted out. I love it when people tell me that because it means that other people have already found all of the junk and I have the opportunity to find some really good finds.
I like the VOC setting/on./ it helps me target easier.
I am a coin collector, so I look for old coins specifically silver. In one of those hunted out areas, I recently found a 1870S seated liberty dime. Here in Roswell there are a lot of old houses I have been able to get permission to hunt them on a regular basis. They are true hot spots for turn of the century. I found barber silver coins, a V Nickle, and Indian head pennies. I also find a lot of Wheaties. I am still looking for that Gold coin, and the weirdest thing I find here is a lot of old musket balls.
My Whites detector has literally been around the world. I have taken it with me during my business travels to France, Germany, & China. I searched the base of the Great Wall of China and found an ancient spear head that I donated to a local museum. I also found a dog tag of a U S soldier killed in China. The dog tag was returned to his family. There are many more stories like this but you get the idea.
I would recommend Whites metal detectors to anyone. They are easy to use and the technology is geared for finding whatever you want to hunt. They are a quality machine and will last and when you need them to. Whites will give them a tune up and up date the electronics at a reasonable price. I have that much in old zinc pennies that I can’t do anything with.
Enjoy your machine and remember that it is only as good as your effort to use it. With experience, you will find what you’re looking for. So get out there and have fun.
