I have been a metal detector user since 1957. I started this hobby using a surplus military mine detector on the beaches around Miami, Florida with great success. The mine detector could not detect individual coins but would pick up larger objects like bracelets, watches, and clusters of coins on the sandy beaches. At the time, it never occured to me that certain coins could be more valuable than face value, I was strictly looking for spending money. Most items were found within a few inches of the surface, with rare finds down to four inches. The old mine detector was heavy, awkward to carry, and consumed a lot of battery power with it's tube type circuits.
I bought a Fisher T-10X in the early sixties and it improved my recovery rate dramatically. Back then the detectors did not have discriminating circuity and I certainly dug my fair share of bobby pins, nails, foil, and assorted trash. The early sixties is when the pull tab appeared on cans and I was amazed at how quickly these tabs trashed the country. Thank goodness for the invention of the discriminating circuits.
I've owned a lot of different detector brands over the years and most were good units; but, I've also had a few detectors that were very poor at detecting items made of gold. All detectors that I've tried in the last fifteen years have been very good.
At the present time I'm using minelab Quatro and Explorer detectors and have been thrilled with the depth of detection I'm getting with these units. I do have one problem with double "D" coils. I have a hard time pinpointing targets. It was taking me too long at each hole to find the target. I phoned Kellyco and the salesman recommended I switch to a concentric coil.... which solved my problem, and without any loss of depth.
I've dug some really deep holes with these new detectors to retrieve old coins. It seems that all the major brand name detectors are really good units and they all are detecting deeper and deeper. I've been very happy with my Minelab units and would certainly recommed them. If these detectors keep going much deeper I may have to eventually use a backhoe to dig the holes.

I’m a newbie when it comes to metal detecting, and had wanted to get into it for quite a while. So I searched the internet for all brands and places to buy metal detectors. When all was said and done, I probably looked for about 3 months or longer before deciding which detector to purchase. I finally decided on buying my Minelab Quattro MP from Kellyco. I received the detector sometime in Nov, 2007. So far I have found five rings (one being a 14 KT gold wedding band that is very thin, and was about ten inches from the surface. It also was in a location that had been extensively hunted by other metal detectors), four bracelets, about thirty eight dollars, eight wheat pennies and one mercury dime.
I was at this park one time and two other people were detecting. They had Whites and my Minelab was finding stuff that they missed. They told me mine was ringing a lot more than theirs. I just couldn't believe it. That’s where I found the wedding band and the mercury dime, and about 4 dollars. I don’t get out like I should, but I do go when I can. I saw people out before looking and it looked like fun, but I have found it can be a lot of work and the time goes by fast.
I have read up on the Minelab and found that it is one of the top detectors today and not a bad price that I got from Kellyco. The service was very fast and friendly. I am even thinking about buying another one for my wife, an Excalibur II. I have the Quattro MP - it is light weight and I really like that the wires that go inside the frame. It looks good that way, and it is safe from damage also. The Quattro is so easy to use you just turn it on and go, no adjusting of buttons or turning of knobs. Mostly, I like looking for coins and jewelry in the clay dirt. I also enjoy the saltwater beaches here in Virginia.
The screen is big and clear, and I don't even need to use my glasses. I am still learning the sounds and numbers of different coins and metals, but it has been very easy to learn how to use it. I just love my detector, and I have told several people about it. I have also told them Kellyco is the place to buy your detector! So if you want a hobby that is fun and gets you out I would recommend this metal detector over others. Thank you Kellyco, once again for everything! Oh, and everyone may your finds be big!
